Corporate Investment Performance & Customer Focus


Via Rail has started running its very own current network since 1990. The main goal of operating its own network was focusing its power on reducing overhead cost and expenses including administration and corporate costs. All while at the same time improving the current quality of their services and implementing new ones. Via Rails network is and has been successful in they're goal. Quality and service has improved, and costs to the public have been reduced. 

Since 1990 Via Rail has managed to: 
  • Reduced reliance on government operating funding by 32% 
  • Increased revenues by 94% 
  • Improved cost recovery by 72% 
  • Increased passenger miles by 9% 

The past couple of years performance has been challenged by multiple market conditions including physical equipment aging, reliability and overall performance of passenger trains. Via Rails Economic Action Plan's capital investments will go towards infrastructure improvements in the Ontario-Quebec corridor. These investments will help eliminate delays and increase track capacity. Which will and should overall increase Via Rail's effiency 

Business Travel - Marketing Approach


On-Train-Entertainment - CBC Partnership

Via Rail , the National Film Board of Canada,CBC/ Radio- Canada, and Historica-Dominion have partnered together to provide digital media for it's passengers, "On-Train Entertainment". An online web application that is easily accessible on laptop, mobile, and tablet. A one of a kind application that provides passengers with TV shows, historical documentaries, animated shorts and regular daily podcasts, completely free. 


In my opinion I think this is a great feature for Via Rail to have. I know myself, being an avid technology enthusiast I am definitely attracted to this app. Although not all of the programs appeal to me, I like the idea of combining a free online WiFi service and CBC's entertainment service.  I feel like this will go a very long way, and continue to attract consumers.

Free-on board Wi-Fi



In 2006 Via Rail Canada has implemented free wireless internet access aboard in most trains, and all business station lounges. Searching the web, checking your personal email, even instant message and social media web-sites are all permitted. Downloading or uploading large files including watching / streaming videos are not.

Wi-Fi service is not available on the following trains

  • * Trains 97 and 98 (Toronto - Niagara Falls - New York)
  • * Trains 85 and 88

Introduction

Via Rail Canada founded in 1978, an independent crown corporation offering passenger rail services by CN (Canada National Railway) and CP (Canadian Pacific). Just under 500 trains are operated per week, throughout eight provinces in Canada over a 12,500km track. The Headquarters for the company is located in Montreal Quebec.
